Brief overview of the saola -
It was first officially found during the May of 1992, when joint survey by the Ministry of Forestry of Vietnam and WWF collaborated together. This began after the team had found a skull in a hunter's home that had very long straight horns which was unusual for any set species, it was only after this evidence of sorts was found that they knew this could be an unknown species. This actually proved that they had found the 1st large mammal thats new to science in 50 years, which became one of the world most shocking and amazing zoological discoveries of this century so far.
The saola's, pronounced as sow-la, are recognised by their horns both parallel with very sharp pointed ends which can reach up to 50cm (20 inches) There horns are found in both genders and their name actually means spindle horn as in vietnam the spindles are both straight strong and parallel posts like the animals horns. They are currently only found in the Annamite Mountians of Vietnam and Loas. They are a critically endangered species seeing as their population is currently unknown.
I personally feel as though this is an issue that with enough funding and passion we can solve, how many more species do we want to see drift into extinction until we realise the error of our way?

What can we all do?
Your probably wondering how you can help this critically endangered species and whilst there is a small amount of options there are ways that you as an individual, group or even school can help make a change to there status.
The first thing you can do is help to raise awareness of this species as they are not very well known due to their dwindling numbers. As an individual you could donate money or sponsor them as a family by donating a certain amount to the cause each month or year. Unfortunately since their is so little information on them you can only donate money to them but you could hold a school fundraiser for endangered species with an animal movie on at lunch or during a class where people pay money to 'view' the film and the money goes to a organisation known to help the saola's like the WWF.
As a school community you could have an environmental awareness day where you hold a lunchtime activity like an amazing race and the answers are answers to questions about the endangered species (the questions would have to be not too hard for the younger students). You can use your imagination and creativity to create anything you could dream of in order to raise money. All donations and fundraiser's are greatly appreciated and with your help we may be able to stop them from going down the path to extinction.
